Guest critics from KNOCK Inc, Walker Art Center, and Curb Crowser to review projects in Advanced Portfolio Development

I’m happy to announce that we’ve got 4 great visiting critics for my Advanced Portfolio Development workshop at MCAD. Each guest will review portfolios and work-in-progress projects. Priority will be given to those students whose projects are mostly closely aligned with a particular guest’s expertise.

Visiting critics:

J. Zachary Keenan, Creative Director, The MVA Studio/Adjunct Faculty, MCAD

March 13th

Zachary Keenan brings a broad work experience with brands. He worked as a designer at Olson before becoming Creative Director of MCAD DesignWorks where he led a team of students to produce work for the college, small businesses and the city of Minneapolis. As Design Manager of American Public Media he worked on the launch and branding of Minnesota Public Radio’s The Daily Circuit news program. In addition to design, Zachary is sought after as an illustrator with client list that includes the Star Tribune.

Maranatha Wilson, Sr. Art Director, Curb Crowser/Adjunct Faculty, MCAD

March 20th

Maranatha Wilson is a designer, art director, and creative director of various award-winning interactive, print, motion design, and video production work for clients like General Mills, 3M, Health East, CBS, and more. Wilson has won two upper Midwest regional Emmy awards for her motion-design reel, and she has a silver pin award from Ad Fed’s The Show. She was in the Artcrank poster exhibition for two years, and she has design and illustration work in various publications and websites including Bastardized by Bunch Design, How to Use Images by Laurence King publishing, 3x3 Illustration Magazine, and Typography Served. Wilson has lectured about her work and the creative process at various events around Minneapolis.

Todd Paulson, Chief Creative Officer/Partner, KNOCK, Inc.

March 27th

Todd’s innate vision for possibility, creative acumen and holistic leadership style are among KNOCK’s greatest assets, as well as his 20 years of award-winning campaigns for Target, New Balance and other national brands. He spearheads the groundbreaking work that has earned KNOCK international recognition, inspiring their teams to take every client challenge as a personal mission.

Andrea Hyde, Designer, Walker Art Center

April 3rd

“The Walker affords me the opportunity to work on diverse, award-winning projects. On any given day I engage in art direction, project management, pre-press/production, writing/blogging, and design for identity systems, institutional campaigns, publications, sites/site graphics, packaging, exhibition graphics, and large-scale signage. All projects—whether collaborative or self-directed—are taken from concept to delivery, and are inspired by the smart and creative clients I work with and the artists/initiatives we support.” (From LinkedIn)

This is going to be a great class and a unique situation (outside of a thesis seminar)—you propose a project, get initial feedback on rigor and feasibility, and then you work. Every week will be critique and work-time.
